Gysel has been in the medical field for over 25 years. She started off as an EMT in 1995 and soon after became a Paramedic in 1998 where she worked in the 911 system in New York City, one of the busiest centers in the country, for twelve years. Her expertise and ability to think clearly in stressful situations were a perfect fit for this work. In 2006, she became interested in organ donation and she joined the team at Live On NY, formerly known as New York Organ Donor Network. She worked full time while still maintaining her Paramedic license and continuing to work in the 911 system. Gysel started out in a pilot program at Live On NY as one of the first Paramedics to be hired as a Donor Evaluation Coordinator, a position formerly reserved only for RNs. During her tenure at Live On NY, she worked her way up to Senior Transplant Coordinator, a position and role that included being responsible for precepting, mentoring, referring and assisting with donor management. Gysel specialized in Lung Management on donors to improve lung transplantation and served as a consultant for other coordinators who needed assistance with unstable donors.
